Shopping for Wedding Ties

Neckties vs Cravats
The decision whether to opt for wedding ties or cravats is a personal one. What is your preference? There are no fixed rules but the decision may depend on the formality of your wedding day. Cravats are generally more popular for formal weddings. Cravats are also unique has they're generally not worn every day, so they make a nice change to normal neckties and make the wedding feel more special...
Cravats, especially silk cravats, are generally more expensive then ties, so if costs are an issue it's worth keeping this in mind, especially if you have a large groomsmen party to buy ties for.
Wedding cravats are available to buy in pre-tied and self-tie forms, and which you decide upon is simply down to personal preference. They look identical when worn. Pre-tied cravats are generally more popular (considered less hassle) but in reality tying a self-tie cravat is no different to tying a normal necktie! Most cravats used for formal occasions such as weddings are worn with wing collar shirts but a normal shirt will be fine.
Bow Ties and Cummerbunds
Some people prefer bow ties instead of neckties or cravats for their wedding day. Luxury bow ties are widely available from KJ Beckett in a myriad of colors and styles. As with cravats, bow ties can be either pre-tied or self-tie. KJ Beckett’s collection of bow ties from Robert Charles are all available in both pre-tied and self-tie.
Many bow ties have matching cummerbunds and often come in box sets (such as Frederick Theak’s). Apart from the normal plain colours, bow ties and cummerbunds are also available in various patterns and tartans, although these are generally more costly than plain materials.
Cleaning / Caring of Ties
Make sure your neckties or cravats don't get creased. Lay them out flat or hang ties on a tie rack (KJ Beckett recommend the use of tie racks). Furthermore store the tie away from light to prevent fading.
If you try them on, ensure you undo any knots in the tie and hang it following your trial to let lines from the knot disappear. Always unkot your necktie. Alternatively roll the tie up from the narrow end and leave for two days to remove crinkles. If you are traveling with your tie, loosely roll it and place inside a sock (or use a tie case).
If on the wedding day you suffer a spillage, deal with it without delay to avoid any permanent stains. Do not rub the spillage … instad blot it with a dry cloth to soak up as much of the spillage as possible. If it's something that can usually dissolve in water, let it dry and then gently rub it with the narrow end of the necktie.
If you need to iron your wedding tie, do not iron directly - protect the fabric by covering the tie with a cotton cloth (such as a washing-up cloth or handkerchief) and iron on a cool setting.
Although some tie instructions recommend dry-cleaning a tie, many people find this changes the feel of the tie (it may loose its luster) and may even press the tie flat. Enquire with the dry cleaner how they clean neckties to make sure your tie keeps its shape and texture.
